How this calculator works
It is based on published 2026 ranges. Board and care homes in California typically charge $3,000 to $6,000 a month, a statewide range, because no published survey we trust breaks board and care out for Los Angeles County. That price usually includes room, meals, care, and medication management. We place your answer within that range based on the level of care, because care level moves a board and care quote more than location does.
For assisted living we start with typical studio base rent in the area you picked, as published for Los Angeles neighborhoods, then add the published ranges for medication management ($200 to $600 a month) and for personal care tiers ($500 to $2,200 a month). Assisted living communities price care separately from rent, which is why the same apartment can cost very different amounts for two residents.
Memory care communities in Los Angeles typically cost $7,629 to $9,000 a month at the starting tier, and $9,000 to $11,000 in West Los Angeles. In-home care through an agency runs about $36 to $40 an hour in West Los Angeles, the only LA rate the source publishes; other parts of the county may cost less.
What it does not include
Real quotes depend on things a calculator cannot see: whether a room is private or shared, specific medical needs, incontinence care, behaviors, and how much a particular home wants to fill a bed this month. That last one is why it pays to ask someone who knows which homes have openings.
Questions families ask
Why is board and care usually cheaper than assisted living?
A board and care home is a regular house with six or fewer residents, so there is no lobby, dining hall, activities staff, or management layer to pay for. Most homes also price care into one monthly rate instead of charging rent plus separate care tiers.
Does Medicare pay for board and care or assisted living?
No. Medicare does not pay for long-term residential care. It may cover a short stay in a skilled nursing facility after a hospital admission, and it covers hospice, including hospice delivered inside a board and care home that holds a hospice waiver.
Can Medi-Cal help pay?
Possibly. Medi-Cal programs can pay for the care services in a licensed home for eligible members, but the resident still pays room and board, usually from their income. Try our Medi-Cal eligibility check to see where you stand.
Rather just talk it through?
We will call you back the same business day. There is no cost to your family. The care home pays our placement fee.
