Burnout does not arrive all at once. It builds through missed sleep, skipped doctor appointments of your own, short tempers, and the feeling that there is no one else who can do it. If you are reading this, you may already be there.
Warning signs
- You are not sleeping through the night because you are listening for them.
- Your own health, job, or marriage is slipping.
- You feel resentful, numb, or tearful most days.
- You have stopped seeing friends because you cannot leave.
- The care needed now involves lifting, nighttime help, or behaviors you cannot safely manage.
Help that exists in California
California funds a statewide network of Caregiver Resource Centers that offer family caregivers consultation, support groups, short-term counseling, legal and financial consultation, and help paying for respite. If your loved one is on hospice, Medicare's hospice benefit includes short inpatient respite stays so the caregiver can rest.
Respite first, then decide
A respite stay of a week or two in a licensed board and care home gives you real rest, and gives everyone a chance to see how your loved one does with professional caregivers. Many families are surprised by how well it goes.
Moving them is not giving up
Choosing a good care home means your parent gets caregivers who work in shifts and go home rested, and you get to be their son, daughter, or spouse again instead of their only nurse. That is not failure. It is often the most loving decision available.
