Short respite stays

A licensed home for a week or a month, so your parent is safe while they recover, or while the family caregiver finally gets a break.

What it is

Respite care is a short stay in a licensed care home. Families use it after a hospital stay when a parent is not quite ready to go home, while the main caregiver travels, has surgery, or simply needs rest, or as a trial run before deciding on a permanent move.

Many board and care homes accept short stays when they have a room open. Your parent gets the same care, meals, and supervision as permanent residents, in a household rather than a facility.

Signs this may be the right fit

  • They are recovering and not ready to be alone
  • The family caregiver needs surgery, travel, or rest
  • You want to try a home before committing
  • Caregiver burnout is building

What to look for

  • Minimum stay and daily or weekly rate.
  • The same paperwork as a permanent move, including a physician's report and TB clearance.
  • Whether the room could become permanent if the stay goes well.

What it costs and who pays

Respite stays are usually priced by the day or week, often at a higher daily rate than a monthly stay. Ask each home for its respite rate and minimum stay.

How we help

No cost to your family, start to finish

We find a room for the dates you need

Respite depends on openings. We call around so you do not have to.

We keep the paperwork light

Respite still needs the state forms. We tell you exactly which.

We help if it becomes permanent

Many respite stays turn into a permanent move. That is fine, and easy.

Questions families ask

How short can a respite stay be?

It depends on the home. Some accept a week, others prefer a month. We will find one that fits your dates.

Does insurance cover respite?

Usually not for board and care. Some long-term care insurance policies do, and VA programs may help veterans.
