Medi-Cal and CalAIM placement
If your parent has Medi-Cal, programs may pay for the care in a licensed home. We help you understand what applies and work alongside the agencies that authorize it.

What it is
Two Medi-Cal routes can help pay for assisted living or board and care in Los Angeles County. CalAIM Community Supports lets Medi-Cal health plans pay for assisted living services for members leaving a nursing home after 60 days or more, or who need nursing-home level care and want to avoid going in. The Assisted Living Waiver serves people with full-scope Medi-Cal and zero share of cost who need nursing-home level care, and has a waitlist.
Neither pays rent. Both cover the care services, and the resident pays room and board from their income. For someone on SSI and SSP, the 2026 payment for an older adult in licensed care is $1,626.07 a month, and they keep at least $182 for personal needs.
GentlePlacement is not a contracted Community Supports provider and does not work for any health plan. We submit your parent's referral to the contracted agencies whose care navigators handle authorization, find a home in their network, and stay with it until your parent moves in.
Signs this may be the right fit
- Your parent has full-scope Medi-Cal
- They are in a nursing home and could live somewhere less restrictive
- They need nursing-home level care but want to stay in the community
- Their savings are under the 2026 Medi-Cal asset limit of $130,000
What to look for
- Share of cost. Some programs require zero share of cost. Check your parent's Medi-Cal notice.
- Which health plan they are in. Community Supports are delivered through Medi-Cal managed care plans.
- The new asset limit. Since January 2026, $130,000 for one person, plus $65,000 for each additional household member.

What it costs and who pays
Our help costs your family nothing. The receiving home pays our fee. The resident pays room and board from their income, and the Medi-Cal program pays for the care services if the authorization is approved.

Questions families ask
Does Medi-Cal pay for board and care?
Medi-Cal programs can pay for the care services for eligible members. The resident still pays room and board, usually from Social Security or SSI.
Is there a waitlist?
The Assisted Living Waiver has one. CalAIM Community Supports timing depends on the health plan and the contracted agency. We will tell you what to expect.
Are you a CalAIM provider?
No. We are a private placement service. We submit referrals to the contracted agencies and help your family through the process.
