Care homes for veterans and surviving spouses
VA Aid and Attendance can pay a meaningful share of the cost of a board and care home. Many families who qualify never apply.

What it is
Aid and Attendance is an additional amount added to a VA pension for veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, or eating, or who live in a care facility because of a disability. It is paid to the veteran or spouse, who can use it toward the cost of a board and care home.
Effective December 1, 2025, the maximum annual pension rate with Aid and Attendance is $29,093 for a veteran with no dependents, $34,488 for a veteran with one dependent, and $18,697 for a surviving spouse with no dependents. The net worth limit is $163,699. The actual payment depends on income and medical expenses, and the cost of care counts as a medical expense.
Signs this may be the right fit
- Your parent served in the military, or their late spouse did
- They need help with daily activities
- Net worth is under the VA limit
- They are paying privately for care
What to look for
- Service requirements. The VA pension has wartime service and discharge requirements. Check with the VA or an accredited representative.
- Use an accredited representative. Help applying should be free. Be wary of anyone charging to file.
- Keep receipts. Care home costs are counted as medical expenses, which can increase the benefit.
What it costs and who pays
Our placement help is free. Board and care in California typically costs $3,000 to $6,000 a month in 2026, and Aid and Attendance can cover a significant share of that for eligible veterans and surviving spouses.

Questions families ask
Does the VA pay the care home directly?
No. Aid and Attendance is paid to the veteran or surviving spouse as part of their pension, and they use it toward the cost of care.
Can a surviving spouse qualify?
Yes. Surviving spouses of wartime veterans may qualify for the Survivors Pension with Aid and Attendance, subject to income and net worth limits.
